"Arcane Magic is bound within Spellbooks and Scrolls, and conveys the power over all earthly force and matter, whether fire, ice, wind, wood, steel or rock..."

Arcane Magic is one of the schools of Magic in Dungeon Lords, and is both most common used and the most encountered. Arcane Magic is almost exclusively composed of attack spells, with the only exception being buff spells.

FUNCTIONEdit

"Spellbooks are the most common form of Arcane Magic, the spell unleashed when the written words are spoken. The more powerful the spell, the greater must be the skill of the caster, or else the spell will fail. Once invoked, the words fade from the Spellbook, their magic consumed."

Arcane Magic spells are stored in Spellbooks. Every copy of a Spell book enables a character to cast the spell once, so ten copies equals ten uses before recharging. Spellbooks recharge their energy over time, with the higher level spells taking longer to recharge. The Scribe skill increases the recharge rate of all Spell books enabling more usage for the higher level spells. Copies of Spellbooks stack, so there is only one icon per spell in a player's inventory, and this enables the player to sell off copies, i.e. charges, of a spell for gold.

Scrolls are also considered a form of Arcane Magic. Many Scrolls cast Arcane spells: Freezing Touch, Magic Missile, Shrieking Star, Fireball, and Blast Nova. Scrolls work independent of the player's Arcane Magic Skill, which is both a benefit and a liability. The benefit is that a Scroll will never fail from the user not having enough Arcane Magic Skill. The liability is that a Scroll will never gain the bonus from the user having a high Arcane Magic Skill.

SUPPORTEdit

The Mage starting class has a bonus for learning Arcane Magic as does all of its upgraded incarnations (Sorcerer/Wizard, Battlemage/Warlock, Shugenja, Kenjassai). Also the Enchantress and Warwitch classes of the Sisterhood offer learning bonuses for the Arcane Magic Skill.

Joining the Guild of Mages not only allows for the Sorcerer and Battle Mage classes, as well as the Wizard and Warlock, but also unlocks the full inventory of the guild's shops. If the player finds or gains a Spellbook that is not normally sold at a guild shop, selling a copy of that Spellbook to the shop will add it to the shop's normal merchandise. This will enable the player to buy an infinite number of copies, at least in CE.

Several Heraldry items also support Arcane Magic. The Magician gives a ten percent bonus when casting an Arcane Spell. The Knave of Wands gives a five percent bonus when casting an Arcane Spell, and a five percent bonus to Arcane Spell recharging. The Sun and the Moon gives a fifteen percent bonus to Arcane and Nether Magic, as well as a bonus to the Ninjutsu skill. The Vixen gives a ten percent bonus to all magic, in addition to all of its other effects. The Wizard gives a fifteen percent bonus to Arcane and Nether, as well as a resistance boost.

The Scribe Magic skill is the direct support for the Arcane Magic Skill. It decreases the recharge time for all Spellbooks. The higher its level, the faster any and all Arcane spells will recharge. With a high enough level, lower level Arcane Spells can recharge almost as fast as enemies appear. Most of the Mage's upgrade paths have this skill, and also the final upgrade classes can have a learning bonus for it. There are also several Diabolic Skills that support Arcane Magic. The Spellfire skill, unique to the Wizard class, boosts the amount of damage inflicted by a character’s magic spells, and improves their ability to penetrate anti-magic fields and barriers. The Drainlife skill, available to the Cabalist, War Witch, and Warlock classes, grants the user the ability to absorb Life directly from enemies when they are hit by the character’s magical attacks. It is unknown if the Freezing Touch or Burning Hands would gain any bonus from these skills, as they are indirect attacks. The Iron Will skill, available to the Kenjasai and Star gazer classes, prevents spell interruption, which can be a great boost.

SPELL LISTEdit

Level 1

Freezing Touch- Freeze enemies by melee attacking them

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as it is encased in blue energy. When the caster attacks, if it connects to the victim, the victim is encased in ice. This spell adds on a little extra damage, but usually only against creatures that use fire attacks. The number of attacks that can be made before the effect fades, and the duration of the freeze are determined by the caster’s Arcane Magic skill level.

This spell is fairly useful, but there are limitations. First, it only applies to the player’s primary melee weapon. This means it has no effect on ranged weapons or dual wielded melee weapon. Second, if the weapon has an effect of its own, like magic flash or fire strike, then the weapon’s built in effect will negate the spell. Third, if the target’s resistance is too high, then the spell will do little damage and will fail to freeze. None the less, this spell is ideal when going toe to toe with monsters that use fire, as they are usually susceptible to ice attacks. This spell has been known to have been dropped by Dire Witches. This spell is sold at the Arcane Emporium in Fargrove to all classes.

Shrieking Star - Shoots a disc of sparks that do low damage to any enemy passing near it

The caster does an underhanded toss to throw the disc. Quickly after the disc is thrown, it radiates sparks that damage any creatures nearby. The disc itself does little damage, and individually the sparks do even less. However, when the disc passes by, a victim is hit from front, sides, and behind. As an attack against a single enemy, it is near useless. Used to thin out a crowd of foes, it works wonders.

For best effect, this spell MUST be used at a distance, so the sparks have time to spread out. It is important to note that if one has a high enough Arcane Magic skill level (above seven), then the sparks just passing next to the creature is enough to cause damage. This spell is extremely common. It is dropped by Dire Witches, Goblin Mages, and is sold at the Arcane Emporium in Fargrove to all players.

Level 2

Fire Mines- Creates small fires that damage enemies and sets them on fire when they touch them

This spell has not been used yet. Judging by its description, it is most likely the spell ability used by the Elven Banshee, and creates an area of sparks (like the Shrieking Star spell) that radiate from the caster, knocking away and damaging enemies.

Despite its low level, this spell has not been seen anywhere as of this writing. There are also several accounts of online players that the spell is not even really in the game. These accounts state that the only way to get this spell is to “hex edit” a save file, which is tricky, and then while the icon shows up in the player’s arsenal, it remains inert and useless. It may be just another unfinished detail in the game, i.e. a broken spell.

Magic Missile- Magic projectile that explodes on impact damaging nearby enemies

The caster does an underhanded toss to throw the green and white sphere projectile. It flies towards its target, and explodes upon impact with it or anything that it touches. Whatever it hits takes the brunt of damage, but there is a small amount of splash damage. It is best used against single opponents.

This spell is extremely common. If the player is a Mage, this will be his or her most reliable spell, since its power constantly improves as the player’s Arcane Magic skill improves. It will probably not be used as much as other higher spells such as Blast Nova or Shooting Sparks, but it is a solid fall back and ranged attack. It is dropped by Dire Witches, Goblin Mages, and is sold at the Arcane Emporium in Fargrove to all classes.

Burning Hands- Set enemies on fire by melee attacking them

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as it is encased in fire. When the caster attacks, if it connects to the victim, the victim is set on fire. This spell adds extra damage, especially against plant monsters, but its main virtue is that monsters on fire take damage as long as the fire lasts, and they are not able to function as well either. The number of attacks that can be made before the effect fades, and the duration of the flame are determined by the caster’s Arcane Magic skill level.

This spell is fairly useful, but there are limitations. First, it only applies to the player’s primary melee weapon. This means it has no effect on ranged weapons or dual wielded melee weapon. Second, if the weapon has an effect of its own, like magic flash or ice strike, then the weapon’s built in effect may negate the spell. Third, if the target’s resistance is too high, then the spell will do little damage and will fail to ignite. None the less, this spell is ideal when going toe to toe with plant monsters, as they are usually susceptible to fire attacks. This spell has been known to have been dropped by Goblin Mages. This spell is sold at the Arcane Emporium in Fargrove to all classes.

Level 3

Blasting Winds- Strong winds that do little damage, but have strong knockback The player does a double punch, and a stream of gray smoke erupts from his or her fists. The player can run around and move while the stream is shooting to target multiple enemies. This is definitely a must have for magic users.

The weakness of almost all magic users is melee combat. This spell sends out a stream of gray gas, representing wind, and the closer a foe is to the source, the more damage the foe will take. This spell is handy for taking out weaker enemies that like to get in close, although, this spell does not do much damage even at higher levels. It instead focuses on pushing enemies away from the caster. It does do some continuous damage, and at higher levels, it can be ideal for dealing with swarms of weak creatures such as rats and bats. This spell has been known to be dropped by Wylvan Renegades. This spell can be bought from Rianne the Wiccan in the Devil’s Marsh by any class.

Fire Burst- Dual fire projectiles that explode on impact damaging nearby enemies The caster does a slow one two punch combo when casting this spell. At each punch, a sphere similar to the Magic Missile is thrown from the caster’s fists. Each individual projectile does more damage than the Magic Missile, but the area of effect is not noticeably larger.

This spell is much like the Magic Missile. If the player is a devotee of magic attacks at all, this spell is definitely a must have. Its power grows through the Arcane Magic skill, and it is fast and powerful to begin with. While it is more powerful directly, it does not seem to have the same amount of splash damage than the Magic Missile spell has. Some enemies drop this spell, but not as frequently as Magic Missile, Shrieking Star, or even Fireball. The Arcane Emporium in Fargrove sells this to all classes.

Level 4

Fireball- Ball of fire that explodes on impact damaging and setting ablaze nearby enemies

The caster hands fill with fire, and he or she raises them over his or her head, and performing an overhead toss. The fire from both hands merges together, and is thrown as a comet like projectile. It explodes when it collides with an object, be it wall or monster. It has a much larger area of effect, than a Magic Missile, doing more damage and setting nearby victims on fire.

This is one of the best spells in the game. It is the most powerful spell easily obtained by non mages, and is deadly in the hands of skilled mages. It has an excellent area of effect, and usually, anyone hit will most likely be on fire. It is especially effective on plant and undead monsters. This spell is dropped by Goblin Mages (though rarely), Fathien Bladewitches, Goblin Warlocks, and other monsters. This spell is also sold at the Arcane Emporium to all players.

Freeze- Freeze an enemy

The player dips his weapon and down and then lifts it skyward. If it takes effect, the target is encased and immobile in ice. It does minor damage, but leaves the victim a sitting duck for many attacks. This spell is very effective against any fire users.

This spell could be called the dragon slayer. If it takes, then the dragon will take damage and be immobile. It will land on the ground unable to attack, leaving it open for powerful combo attacks. This works wonders for all players who are trying to deal with the beasts. Any player who is part Mage will find this spell very useful in other ways, such as for thinning out crowds by taking some enemies out of the fight. However, even at the higher Arcane Magic Skill levels, this spell barely does any damage, and then it only seems to affect anything fire based. Regardless, anything can be frozen, if only for a short amount of time. This spell is sold by Grymlock to all classes.

Shooting Sparks- Group of sparks that damage nearby enemies

The player does a double punch, and a shower of golden sparks is released from his or her fists. The player can run around and move while the stream is shooting to target multiple enemies. This is definitely a must have for magic users.

The weakness of almost all magic users is melee combat. This spell sends out a stream of sparks, and the closer a foe is to the source, the more damage the foe will take. This spell is handy for taking out any enemy that likes to get in close, as the closer they get, the more they will hurt. The most noticeable effect of higher Arcane Magic skill levels on this spell is power, range, and duration. At lower levels, this spell is only good for close range combat. At higher levels, this spell can hit enemies standing some distance away, though not as good as the Magic Missile. Its power increases somewhat slowly, and its duration increases even slower. This spell can be bought from Rianne the Wiccan in the Devil’s Marsh by any class.

Zap- Electrical projectile

The player does a double punch, and his or her hands glow. A second later, a beam of yellow electricity is shot from his or her fists. The player can run around and move while the stream is shooting to target multiple enemies. This is definitely a must have for magic users.

The weakness of almost all magic users is melee combat. This spell sends out a beam of electricity, and the closer a foe is to the source, the more damage the foe will take. This spell is sold by the Arcane Emporium to members of the Guild of Mages.

Level 5

Burning Vapors- Creates of cloud that burns and sets ablaze enemies within it

This spell has not been used yet. Judging by its description, it works like the Poison Cloud Nether Spell, only for those who are in it or touch it, they are ignited instead of poisoned.

This spell has not been seen anywhere as of this writing. There are also several accounts of online players that the spell is not even really in the game. These accounts state that the only way to get this spell is to “hex edit” a save file, which is tricky, and then while the icon shows up in the player’s arsenal, it remains inert and useless. It may be just another unfinished detail in the game.

Ice Shards- Fires like a machine gun freezing nearby enemies

The player does a double punch and a stream of ice crystals flies out from his or her fists. The spell does fair damage, and anyone hit by a piece of ice is frozen and immobilized.

The weakness of almost all magic users is melee combat. This spell sends out a stream of ice, and the closer a foe is to the source, the more damage the foe will take. This spell can be bought from Rianne the Wiccan in the Devil’s Marsh by any player.

Whirlwind- Creates a mini-tornado that damages and whirls enemies about

The player does an overhead chop with both hands, and summons a tornado that is at least two stories high, in game terms. After a brief pause, the tornado slowly moves forward in a straight line along the line of sight from the direction the player was facing when the spell was cast. Anything attempting to run through or near the tornado will take continuous damage.

This spell can quickly clear enemies away from tight spaces, as they cannot get out of its way. It is not as useful outdoors as enemies have more room to dodge. This spell is very effective, but as it is a level five spell, players must put in a large amount of points to see some effects from their Arcane Magic skills. This spell is sold at the Arcane Emporium to members of the Guild of Mages.

Level 6

Blast Nova- Creates a shockwave that damages and blasts enemies back

The player does an overhead chop after gathering yellow energy, and then chucks the energy into the ground. A wave of energy is sent out in a complete circle from the player. Anything within the ring not in a defensive stance takes damage and is knocked back.

This spell screams personal space. It can even hit around corners, if the player is close enough. With its high level, however, this spell is very difficult to power up for characters without learning bonuses to Arcane Magic. If the player is a mage, however, then the formidable power of this spell only becomes more amazing as its range and damage increase. This spell is sold at the Arcane Emporium to members of the Guild of Mages.

Flamethrower- Sets Ablaze nearby enemies

The player does a double punch and a stream of fire shoots out from his or her fists. The spell does good damage, and anyone hit by the stream is ignited and suffers the usual side effects. This spell is ideal for large groups of Mushmen or other plant monsters.

The weakness of almost all magic users is melee combat. This spell sends out a stream of fire, and the closer a foe is to the source, the more damage the foe will take. This spell is not sold anywhere by anyone, and has only been found or looted from enemies. However, selling a copy of the spell to the Magic Emporium (or possibly any shop) will cause the shop to carry this spell.

Iceball- Ball of ice that explodes damaging and freezing nearby enemies

The caster hands fill with blue energy, and he or she raises them over his or her head, and performing an overhead toss. The energy from both hands merges together, and is thrown as a comet like projectile. It explodes when it collides with an object, be it wall or monster. It has an area of effect comparable to the Fireball spell, doing damage and freezing nearby victims. It is especially good against fire monsters, but it does less damage than the Fireball, but its immobilization is a fair trade.

Due to its relatively high level, this spell is difficult to really improve with skill. It is handy to have so that players can immobilize and take out annoying distance enemies. However, it will be difficult for any non mage character to truly use its full potential. It is sold by Grymlock, though it is unknown if one must be a member of the Guild of Mages or the Celestial Order in order to purchase it.

Level 7

Freezing Vapors- Creates a cloud that damages and freezes enemies within it

This spell has not been used yet. Judging by its description, it works like the Poison Cloud Nether Spell, only for those who are in it or touch it, they are frozen instead of poisoned.

Level 8

Fire Missile- Fires like a machine gun damaging nearby enemies and setting them ablaze

This spell has not been used yet. Judging by its icon and description, it is a fire based version of the Ice Shards spell. The player most likely does a double punch and something akin to hot coals shoots out in a stream, damaging and igniting anything in their path.

Ice Nova- Creates a ring of ice that damages and freezes enemies

The player does an overhead chop after gathering blue energy, and then chucks the energy into the ground. A wave of energy is sent out in a complete circle from the player. Anything within the ring not in a defensive stance takes damage and is knocked back and/or frozen.

This spell screams personal space. It can even hit around corners, if the player is close enough. Its range is a little less than the simpler Blast Nova, but whereas the Blast Nova simply knocks them off their feet, victims of the Ice Nova are knocked away and frozen for a short time. It is unclear if it is more or less powerful than the Blast Nova, but elemental factors (i.e. weakness to ice) interfere with accurate judging. With its high level, however, this spell is very difficult to power up for characters without learning bonuses to Arcane Magic. It is sold by Grymlock, though it is unknown if one must be a member of the Guild of Mages or the Celestial Order in order to purchase it.

Level 9

Fire Storm- Rains fire damaging setting enemies ablaze

This spell has not been used yet. Judging by its description, this is probably a Cast type spell that causes fire or some type of heat source (sparks, hot coals, etc.) on top of the target. Being a fire spell, all victims would naturally be ignited.

Ice Storm- Rains ice damaging and freezing enemies

This spell has not been used yet. Judging by its description, this would probably a Cast type spell that causes ice shards to fall on top of a victim or area, and any hit would be frozen.

Level 10

Fire Nova- Creates a ring of fire damaging setting enemies ablaze

The player does an overhead chop after gathering fire into his or her hands, and then chucks the energy into the ground. A wave of energy is sent out in a complete circle from the player. Anything within the ring not in a defensive stance takes damage and is knocked back and/or ignited.

This spell screams personal space. It can even hit around corners, if the player is close enough. This has the smallest blast radius of the nova spells, but it appears to have the highest damage and its burning effect simply adds to it. With its high level, however, this spell is very difficult to even perform reliably, let alone power up for characters without learning bonuses to Arcane Magic. This spell is sold at the Arcane Emporium to members of the Guild of Mages.

Level 12

Cataclysm- Creates a huge explosion that radiates out from the target damaging nearby enemies

This spell has not been used yet.

This spell has not been encountered as of this writing. However, it is known that this spell can only be gained from a special quest.

The spell to get... Cataclysm. (Arcane Magic attained from the demon you have to bargain with. - If you select the spell rather than the weapon for a reward from the tomb.) It is a killer spell.

Note: There are supposedly two more Arcane Magic Spells in the game: Wall of Fire and Pillar of Fire. However, there is no icon for them that has been found, nor is there any mention of them in the original manual. With this in mind, they are ignored for this guide.
