"Rune Magic is contained with secret combinations of the mystical Rune Stones, each stone a source of mana that when joined with other Rune Stones unleashes a spell of great power".

Rune Magic is one of the four schools of magic in Dungeon Lords. It is primarily composed of support spells, much like Celestial Magic. However, while Celestial Magic focuses on healing and defense, Rune Magic focus on spells that increase one or more of the caster's stats, as well as those of his or her allies.

FUNCTIONEdit

The spells of the Rune Magic school are divided into two halves, Rune Spells and Rune Stones. Rune Spells are the actual spell, and say what the spell does, what Rune Stones it needs, and how many charges it has. Rune Stones are the power source for the Rune Spells, each spell drawing from two or more stones. A player only requires one copy of the spell in order to use it, but the spell will require Rune Stones in order to activate it. If a spell requires multiple copies of a single Rune Stone, then in order to use the spell multiple times then the player must have as many required Rune Stones times the number of desired charges. For example, the Rune Speed spell requires one Demotos Rune Stone and two Haentir Rune Stone. For two charges, the player will have to have two Demotos Rune Stones and four Haentir Rune Stone. For three charges, the player will have to have three Demotos and six Haentir, and so on.

While Scrolls are referred to as Arcane Magic and Potions claim no link to any school of magic, there is a scroll and a potion that have the same that have the same effect of certain Rune Spells: Rune Strike and Potion of Power. Scrolls and Potions work independent of the player's Rune Magic Skill, which is both a benefit and a liability. The benefit is that a Scroll or Potion will never fail from the user not having enough Rune Magic Skill. The liability is that a Scroll or Potion will never gain the bonus from the user having a high Rune Magic Skill.

SUPPORTEdit

Rune Magic, like Nether Magic, is more complicated than Arcane or Celestial Magic. As such, none of the basic or apprentice classes have a bonus in learning it. However, there are several journeyman classes that do possess a bonus towards Rune Magic. These would be Celestial/Stargazer, Paladin/Crusader, Monk/Shaolei Master, and War Witch. While the Adept itself may not have any gift for Rune Magic, any and all of its branches will.

While no guild formally supports Rune Magic, the Celestial Order carries some spells and Rune Stones, and the Guild of Mages carries some rune stones. The best place for Rune Spells and Rune Stones is the wizard Grymlock. He has most of these in his inventory. It is unclear if he is a member of the Guild of Mages, but in any event, it appears that his inventory is available to all classes.

RUne Magic does not have its own support skill. The Channel Skill boosts the recharge rate of mana for both the Star Crystals of Celestial Magic and the Rune Stones of Rune Magic. However, the Channel Skill cannot exceed the player's Celestial Magic skill level, no matter the level of the Rune Magic skill level. There are also three Diabolic skills that boost magic. The Spellfire skill, unique to the Wizard class, boosts the amount of damage inflicted by a character’s magic spells, and improves their ability to penetrate anti-magic fields and barriers. The Drainlife skill, available to the Cabalist, War Witch, and Warlock classes, grants the user the ability to absorb Life directly from enemies when they are hit by the character’s magical attacks. It is unknown if the Freezing Touch or Burning Hands would gain any bonus from these skills, as they are indirect attacks. The Iron Will skill, available to the Kenjasai and Star gazer classes, prevents spell interruption, which can be a great boost.

There is also the matter of the Heraldry items. The Warder gives a ten percent bonus when casting a Rune Spell. The Heirophant gives a ten percent bonus to Star Crystal and Rune Stone recharging. The Vixen gives a ten percent bonus to all magic, in addition to all of its other effects.

LISTEdit

Level 1

Rune Strike- Temporarily Increase your strike ( 1 Cytheon and 1 Demetos)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as his or her body is surrounded by a blue swirl. The pattern and color are identical to the Peace Celestial Spell, but the swirl is larger and appears around the caster’s body.

This spell should not be confused with the magical weapon ability called rune strike. This spell boosts the player’s ability to hit while the ability causes enemies to be enveloped in a blue energy sphere that does a lot of damage. The effectiveness of this spell is not really apparent at lower levels. The strike stat determines not only if an attack lands, but also how well it lands. A high strike appears to be able to penetrate heavy armor. Because the player is the target, not a weapon, this spell is effective for both melee and ranged weapons. This spell is sold at the Temple of the Empyroen in Arindale and at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Rune Armor- Temporarily Increase your armor ( 1 Bruenguld and 1 Demotos)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as a circle of runes appears around his or her feet, like several of the healing spells. However, there is no glow. Rather a second, then a third, and maybe a fourth circle of runes appears above the lower ones. The player is now inside of a light blue column of energy.

This spell is handy to have, especially in the first part of the game. There are plenty of times when a little extra protection goes a long way. It is not as useful later in the game, unless the player has a moderate to high level of Rune Magic skill. Still if one does, it certainly doesn’t hurt to make sure it can be used. This spell is sold at the Temple of the Circerne in Fargrove, and at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Level 2

Rune Speed- Temporarily Increase your speed (1 Demotos and 2 Haentir)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as his or her body is surrounded by a yellow swirl. The pattern and color are identical to the Slow Monster Nether Spell, but the swirl is larger and appears around the caster’s body.

This spell can be useful. The speed referred to is not the player’s movement, i.e. walking or running, though it will be raised as well. This spell boosts the speed of the caster’s attacks, making the caster strike faster and more often. However, there is no guarantee that they will hit, merely less likely to be interrupted. The caster’s walking or running speed may gain a slight boost, but it is so slight that it is barely noticeable until the caster has level seven Rune Magic skill. On the other hand, there are times when any speed boost is a good thing. This spell is sold at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Rune Shield- Temporarily Creates an invincible magic shield for blocking (1 Demetos, 1 Erillae, and 1 Feohn)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as a blue disc appears over his or her shield arm. The shield is a light blue with a circle of rounds on it. It then functions like a normal shield.

This spell is very useful if one has it. The shield not only defends the caster, but even if there is a normal shield equipped, the shield covers it and it takes no damage, from magic or regular attacks. This makes it so much easier in dungeons when there may or may not be a way to repair items. The shield does not take damage, but it does have a time limit. This spell is sold at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Level 3

Rune Blade- Enchants your current melee weapon increasing its damage (2 Aenir, 1 Cythoen, and 1 Feohn)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as it is surrounded by a red and orange glow. When the weapon connects, a small explosion occurs and the victim is left engulfed in energy for a few seconds.

All four schools have a spell like this, and they all work the same way. It enchants the caster’s primary melee weapon, NOT secondary melee weapons or ranged weapons. The enchantment also counters the effects of weapons that already have a magical ability built in. This spell is much lower than its Celestial or Nether counterparts, and thus easier to power up. Like its Nether counterpart, Blade of Baal, it appears to be a pure magic attack, unlike the Freezing Touch and Burning Hands Arcane Spells. This spell is sold at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Level 4

Missile Barrier- Creates a magic field around you and protects you from ranged attacks

Boon Strike- Temporarily Increase you and your allies strike (1 Aenir, 1 Cythoen, 1 Demotos, and 2 Geomynn)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as his or her body as well as those of his allies are surrounded by a blue swirl. The pattern and color are identical to the Peace Celestial Spell, but the swirl is larger and appears around the targets’ bodies. It is identical to the Rune Strike spell, but it affects multiple targets.

This spell appears made for multiplayer only. It seems to only affects player, not summons. Because it is slightly higher in level, it does not seem to last as long as Rune Strike. However, that does not diminish its usefulness. With this spell, a Rune Magic specialist can greatly aid any allies in multiplayer. This spell is sold at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Boon Armor- Temporarily Increase you and your allies armor (1 Aenir, 1 Bruenguld, 1 Demotos, and 2 Geomynn)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as a circle of runes appears around his or her feet, like several of the healing spells. However, there is no glow. The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as a blue disc appears over the shield arm of the caster and all nearby allies. The shield is a light blue with a circle of rounds on it. It then functions like a normal shield. It is identical to the Rune Shield spell, but affects multiple targets.

Orb of Defense- Creates some orbs that circle around you and explode if touch by an enemy

This spell has not been used yet.

Comments: This spell has not been seen anywhere as of this writing. There are also several accounts of online players that the spell is not even really in the game. These accounts state that the only way to get this spell is to “hex edit” a save file, which is tricky, and then while the icon shows up in the player’s arsenal, it remains inert and useless. It may be just another unfinished detail in the game.

Level 6

Rune Warrior- Temporarily increase your combat statistics (2 Aenir, 1 Cythoen, 1 Demotos, 2 Feohn, and 1 Haentir)

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as the caster is surrounded by sparkles of multiple colors, which lasts for the duration of the spell.

This spell is a must have for any player with a learning bonus towards Rune Magic, or just have the points to blow on it. This spell, which is mimicked by the Potion of Power, does the work of Rune Strike, Rune Armor, Rune Speed, and then boosts other statistics on top of that. Even if the player is a warrior type, the effects of this spell make Rune Magic a valuable addition to the arsenal. This spell is sold at Grymlock’s Tower in the Northlands.

Boon Blades- Enchants you and your allies current melee weapons increasing their damage

The caster dips his or her weapon hand down, and then lifts it skyward as it and the weapons of nearby allies are surrounded by a red and orange glow. When the weapons connect, a small explosion occurs and the victim is left engulfed in energy for a few seconds.
